So You're Interested in Writing a Script?
Great! Salad City is always looking for new and innovative shows to produce and we would love to hear from you. Salad City Productions works with all different ages levels, so whether you're an elementary school student interested in writing for our youngest students or a published playwright trying to have a new play produced, send us your submissions! Below are some guidelines to help you out. They depict the type of shows that we typically produce, and may guide you in what scripts we are most likely to select. Check out our "Previous Shows" page to see some of the other plays we have produced.
Musicals
- Our musical class performs on the same day that our younger students perform, so we cannot do a show that is longer than 40 minutes.
- Family friendly material.
- All the students performing are between 7 and 13, so the more roles in that age group the better.
- We prefer shows that are mostly ensemble based.
Straight Plays
Group 1 (performers between 11 and 18 years old)
- Plays are a minimum of 40 minutes and no more than 2 hours.
- Material is appropriate for middle school students.
- Characters are close in age to actors (it's never fun when one person is always stuck playing the grownup).
- There are at least 10 characters.
- When possible, ensemble based shows with no obvious leading lady or man.
- The students love doing contemporary drama (but there aren't a lot out there for middle school students).
Group 2 (performers between 6 and 10 years old)
- Plays are no longer than 30 minutes (this is approximately 2,000 to 2,500 words)
- Material is best suited toward children between the ages of 6 to 10.
- The play must have a narrator (who can help provide lines when they are forgotten).
- The number of lines for each character should range from one or two, to around twenty.
- We love lines spoken in chorus!
- When possible, ensemble based shows with no leading girls or boys
